Well, it appears after several years of hiatus that L0phtCrack is back with version 6. For those of you who don't know what L0phtCrack is or does, click "Back" on your browser now. Every hacker used it in the old days when it was known as "LCx". I started with LC3 which then became LC4 and then LC5. In 2000, the team responsible for L0phtCrack became a "legitimate" business under the name of @stake. In 2004 Symantec purchased the company and then in typical big company fashion immediately canned the whole project.
My gripe is that like many other people, the company I was working for at the time had purchased LC5. When Symantec purchased the program and let it die, they let down a lot of people using it. We all had to scramble and find something else to do the job. Well, since then many other tools have taken it's place such as Ophcrack using Rainbow Tables. Now the original developers have reacquired the rights to the program and have released it again. The boys from Boston need to remember that such tools are now a "real" business industry and you can't simply just stop selling and supporting a tool that people have paid real money for without notice.
Time will tell what kind of reception this new release will enjoy.
